ERMi teadusseminar keskendub sel korral Jaapani kultuuri mõtestamisele läbi traditsioonilise käsitöö. Teadusseminar on sel korral inglise keeles.

What is culture, and why does it matter today? This lecture explores these questions through an in-depth study of Kyoto’s traditional crafts. Based on field research across all 74 officially designated categories of Kyoto’s traditional industries, as well as extensive visits to artisans across these fields, the study arrives at a central conclusion: Kyoto represents one of the most concentrated expressions of what can be understood as “Japaneseness.”

Rather than treating culture as a static set of traditions, this talk approaches it as embedded in everyday practices, materials, and ways of living. In Kyoto’s craft communities, culture is visible in how knowledge is transmitted, how continuity is maintained, and how subtle changes are absorbed over time. Through concrete examples, the lecture suggests that culture is not merely something to be preserved but a living and evolving force that shapes how people relate to the past, present, and future.
