As Monster Chetwynd puts it: “I’m impatient when it comes to making things, and I always grab hold of everything around me, even if it doesn’t belong to me—I use it.”
Artist Monster Chetwynd has gained international recognition for her exuberant, carnivalesque performances, drawing inspiration from medieval mystery plays, carnival traditions, art history, and popular culture. Working under aliases including Spartacus and Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, she became the first performance artist to be nominated for the Turner Prize in 2012.
Chetwynd’s artistic practice extends far beyond performance, encompassing painting, sculpture, installation, and film. Her work is characterised by an inventive combination of diverse cultural references and an energetic, playful approach to making.
Published to accompany the first comprehensive presentation of Chetwynd’s work in Switzerland at Kunsthaus Zürich, The Trompe-l’œil Cleavage brings together more than 60 works spanning the past 25 years. Developed in close collaboration with the artist, the book reflects the diversity and distinctive visual language of her practice.
