• Estonian history on stamps in your pocket

The Estonian National Museum’s virtual exhibition Stamps from the Estonian National Museum’s Collection introduces stamps that have been used in Estonia since 1918, including those that were used during the occupation.
Stamps are means of payment for postal services, miniature artworks and carriers of national culture and history. The exhibition can be browsed in both Estonian and English by themes, decades, formats and artists. You can also zoom in on the stamps.

Last year, the Estonian stamp celebrated its 100th anniversary. The change of regime lead to busy times for the postal service. There was also need for a means of postal payment. The first Estonian stamp, which featured a floral pattern, was issued on 24 November 1918. The stamps bore the text “Eesti Post” and had to be cut out of the block individually. In December 1918, a stamp design contest was announced in issue no. 7 of Riigi Teataja. The stamp Kajakas (Seagull) published on 13 May 1919 was the first to feature the text “Eesti Vabariik” (Republic of Estonia”). The standard stamps featuring three heraldic leopards were adopted on 24 September 1928 and the first Estonian stamp block was published as part of the Caritas charity issue series on 21 January 1938.

The story of the rebirth of Estonian postage stamps began on 1 October 1991 with the issue of nine stamps featuring the Estonian coat of arms. The first joint issue, the Estonian-Latvian-Lithuanian-Swedish Mare Balticum. Birds of the Baltic stamp booklet, was published on 3 October 1992.

As of 2004, sending letters became easier. The issue of standard stamp Võilill (Dandelion) on 14 September 2004 marked the beginning of the triumph of self-adhesive stamps.

The last decade has seen the launch of both special-shaped and novelty stamps. The perforation of the stamp depicting the Estonian flag published on 22 February 2013 partially mimics the outline of a flag. Special-shaped stamps were also featured in the stamp block commemorating the Year of Cultural Heritage issued on 3 August 2013 and the block dedicated to the protection of the natural environment of the Baltic Sea published on 12 March 2015. The stamp celebrating the 100th anniversary of the herd book of Estonian native breed cattle issued on 19 July 2014 is printed on a plastic leather-imitation material, which is unique in the world. The stamp block commemorating the 100th anniversary of oil shale mining in Estonia published on 15 July 2016 was partially covered with oil shale dust. The 2016 Christmas stamps were gingerbread-scented. In 2017, they smelled of cinnamon and in 2018 of tangerines. In order to smell it, you need to gently stroke the stamp with your fingertip. The 100th anniversary of Estonian figure skating was celebrated with the respective diamond-shaped stamp issued on 15 April 2017. The stamp celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, however, was released on 22 February 2018 and is made of pure silver. The My Gift to Estonia stamp block issued on 1 September 2018 features the three winning works of a children’s drawing competition of the same name.

The musical stamp block commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Estonian Song Celebration issued on 5 July 2019 is printed on cotton fabric. If you scan the stamp with CEE App, you can listen to the song “Mu isamaa on minu arm” (“My Fatherland is My Love”).

Estonian stamps and stamp blocks have been internationally acknowledged on four occasions:

The XVIII Winter Olympic Games in Nagano stamp (issued in 1998 and designed by Vello Lillemets) came third in the design contest organised by the International Olympic Committee.

The stamp block commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Estonian national ex libris (by artist Lembit Lõhmus) came fifth at the WIPA Grand Prix in 2000.

The stamp block celebrating the 10th anniversary of the reintroduction of the Estonian kroon (by artist Lembit Lõhmus) came sixth at the WIPA Grand Prix in 2002.

The Theatre Estonia 100 stamp block (designed by Ülle Marks and Jüri Kass) was awarded the second prize at the international contest Yehudi Menuhin Trophy 2007.

Our philatelists have also given feedback on issued stamps. The most beautiful stamp of the year was first chosen in 2000. A year later, the voting was carried out by the philatelists’ mailing list, after which special stamps and postal stationary were also involved in the stamp assessment process. Assessment results from 2004 can be viewed here.

Every year, Eesti Post launches approximately 25 issues of stamps and the current average print run of thematic stamps is 25,000. Approximately 25,000 new stamps are published in the world each year.
The 110th anniversary of the Estonian National Museum on 14 April 2019 introduced new custom stamp ERM 110 in two denominations to the museum’s shop. The Estonian National Museum also uses a specially designed date stamp.
In cooperation with Eesti Post, the exhibition is supplemented with new stamps twice a year.

Enjoy exploring the world of stamps!

The museum’s website includes virtual exhibitions of postal history on various topics and the museum's permanent exhibition's open repository features an exhibition on postal history entitled Waiting for the Postman.

More information: exhibition coordinator Eve Aab, Eve.Aab@erm.ee, phone +372 736 3088.
