Dedication. Graphics by Evi Tihemets
In the Gallery (B-entrance)
Open from November 22, 2018 to January 6, 2019.
Evi Tihemets (b. 1932) has been described as a graphic artist with the soul of a painter. It was at the beginning of the 1960s that she brought colours back into Estonian graphic art, and she has remained a persistent user of colours for the last sixty years. She has always kept pace with the changing times, or maybe even been slightly ahead of them, in her artistic discoveries. In the past she has used both lithography and intaglio techniques, mixing them skilfully with photo and digital printing while using special kinds of paper. Recently she has had fun making collages.
This exhibition of her work is dedicated to her husband, Ants Viires (23.12.1918-18.03.2015), on the anniversary of his 100th birthday, as one of the most renowned Estonian ethnologists. He brought into her work many direct influences from the mythology of both the Estonian and other Finno-Ugrian peoples. The exhibits for the present display have been chosen by bearing this fact in mind. Besides the earlier graphic sheets, 14 big collages are exhibited as similar to a dialogue between two people who are dedicated to each other, to their talent and research. Evi Tihemets has put together the most exciting details of her earlier graphic sheets, impressions from Teppo Korhonen’s book „Kuisti. Kansatieteellinen tutkimus,” her memories and impressions from nature, - and also a selection of poems written by Ants Viires.
This is a retrospect of their memories of the wonderful years they spent together.
