About the Library
The Estonian National Museum Library was established in 1923. It is a specialist library containing literature related to the museum’s research fields on Estonians, Finno-Ugric peoples, and, selectively, other peoples as well. Its main subject areas are ethnology, folk art, and museology.
Separate collections are maintained for the library of ethnologist Gustav Ränk, the library of the Estonian Consulate in New York, the Linda Pett collection, the Postal Museum library, the library of the University of Tartu Department of Ethnography, and seminar papers, course papers, and diploma theses by students of ethnography at the University of Tartu (up to 1995). At present, the seminar paper collection is supplemented mainly with the work of graduates of the folk costume school.
The library may be used on site by all interested visitors. The right to borrow materials for home use is granted to ERM employees and contract guides.
ENM Library materials can be found in the ESTER e-catalogue. Materials located in storage must be ordered in advance.

Since November 2024, the Estonian Articles Database ISE has included the subject database Estonian Ethnology, which aims to cover all ethnological texts related to Estonia and Estonians, as well as ethnological texts by all authors with a lasting connection to Estonia. The database includes books, collected volumes of articles, journal articles, and newspaper articles. For now, the years 1918–1970 are covered more thoroughly. The database continues to be expanded.
There are 3 reader computers in the reading room for information searches and for listening to audiobooks of ERM publications with descriptive translation.
As a paid service, it is possible to order copies and print materials (see Price List).
