They came to get us in the middle of
the night, somewhere between 1 and 2 in the morning. Ebba, together
with her son Rein, was at home in Tartu. Her husband Karl and son
Henn were at the Kukula farm in Valgamaa, where they were caught the
same night. Of those who came to arrest us, one spoke Estonian and
two spoke Russian. They didn't want to believe that there were only
two people in such a large apartment, and they turned everything upside
down. They stuffed our silver spoons into their pockets, so that their
pockets were all bulging. Rein took all his mother's medals and threw
them into the wood-burning stove, saying: "You sure don't need
these!" And there they remained.
