Annual Report
Activities of the Friends of the ENM in 2002
Recently the society has been paying more attention to organising information days at schools (twelve times) as well as cultural events dedicated to the festivals in the Estonian popular calendar, which have taken place in the park of Raadi Manor. During our tours all over Estonia we have notified people about the current affairs at the Estonian National Museum and the necessity for a new museum building. The construction works of the new building are not supposed to start until the building of the Estonian Art Museum has been completed, although by the decree of the Parliament the building of the new ENM should have started already in 2002. The general meeting of the society had a discussion about the site for the new building. Should it be at Raadi or on Toome Hill? Also during our county tours people have been interested in this issue.
Altogether, three events were organised by the society at Raadi Manor: St. George’s Day at Raadi Manor on April 23, Midsummer Day at Raadi Manor on June 21, and Michaelmas at Raadi Manor on September 23. Unfortunately, Shrove Tuesday at Raadi Manor did not take place due to lack of snow. Instead of that, children were introduced the customs related to Shrove Tuesday in the Exhibition House of the ENM, also a corresponding evening programme was organised. In cooperation with the Peipsiveere Development Foundation, seminars for the staff of small museums situated in this area were conducted. On December 12 there was a seminar where people were taught how to make Christmas decorations from straw and reed, and on December 13 a Christmas programme introducing the customs related to this period was carried out. Seven study tours were organised in 2002: Petseri - Staraya Russa - Novgorod, two trips to Kihnu and Ruhnu Islands and two to the Åland Islands, and one to Saaremaa – Abruka- Vilsandi as well as to Hiiumaa Island, combined with the information day of the ENM on Suuremõisa Castle Days in August.
Altogether, more than 22 000 people participated in the activities organised by the society in 2002.
